A technician is defined as someone who works for your company, where the cost or scheduling of that work needs to be recorded against bookings in RentalPoint. Technicians associated with Labor Products in Inventory Setup can then be assigned to those Labor Products within a booking.
The order of setup is:
- Set up Technicians tree structure
- Identify Existing Contacts as Technicians
- Associate Technicians with Labor Products
Technician Tree Structure
The Technicians Folder also uses the same Inventory Tree Structure as outlined for your Rental/Sales Inventory, so you can organize your technicians into groups & categories per sample screenshot below. This tree structure need only be set up once and referenced thereafter.
The structure can be as simple as one group and one category OR several groups/categories for full/part time crew, onsite/warehouse staff.

Identify Contacts as Technicians
Once your technician folder groups and categories are set up (see above), you're ready to Identify Contacts as Technicians/Crew
Easily identify technician type and driver status via icons & colouring on the contacts grid as
- In house technician
- Agency technician
- Freelance technician (displays in green)
- Truck driver
- Project Manager
From the Contacts Control Panel, edit the contracting record of any existing contact by clicking on the Last name of the contact on the grid
Next, click on the contracting tab
Then, check the box to identify the contact as a technician
Technician Details
Identify the type of technician your contact is so that you can filter using that information when reporting in RentalPoint.
- In house - directly employed by your company
- Freelance - contracted to your company on job by job basis
- Agency - identifies an outside agency you may use to hire a number of technicians to fulfill a labor commitment on a booking.
Use the Category section to select the category your technician should be associated with in the Inventory Tree (Fig 1.1 above)
Further identify the technician as a Project Manager and/or Driver for use with RP Crew Web and/or Truck Scheduling
If the technician is a freelancer or agency, then a purchase order may be generated when the technician is assigned to a designation / crew task, for this to occur a vendor code must be selected in this window using the button above the vendor for PO’s field. Using these three buttons you may create a new vendor, search for an existing vendor or open the vendor properties for the code already selected.
Primary Skills
Existing skills show up as follows:
- Client charges = the cost you charge clients and will be loaded into bookings when the technician is assigned to a booking
- Our costs = what you pay the technician
Use to add new skills or to edit existing ones
Secondary Skills
Allows for a record of existing secondary skills to be stored against a technician record
Where a certification is required supporting documents must be uploaded to complete the record.
